Lingerie de Paris: Chantal Thomass at BrandAlley

Lingerie should never be underestimated in its power to transform the wearer, making them feel confident, feminine and beautiful. As a lingerie blogger, I find myself seduced by quality garments that are exquisitely designed and well-constructed. My addiction to gorgeous underwear combined with my love for a sale have led me to the discovery of BrandAlley, which has since become one of my ‘go-to’ places for designer lingerie at affordable prices. 

BrandAlley recently got in touch with me to let me know about one of their upcoming designer sales for Chantal Thomass lingerie. Chantal Thomass has been dubbed the “Queen of French Lingerie” and her 40 year career has seen her dabble fearlessly in Ready-to-wear fashion, Interior design and of course, Lingerie. Since the beginning, Chantal Thomass has sought to revolutionise lingerie through a strong focus on aesthetics, transforming lingerie into a celebration of femininity and creativity.

BrandAlley kindly sent me a sample of Chantal Thomass lingerie to review – a perfect way to whet my appetite before the sale officially launched! I received a stunning set from the ‘Broderie Losanges’ line, which comprised a half-cup bra, garter belt and brief. 

The half-cup bra is underwired and unpadded, featuring cups made from nude mesh overlaid by polka-dotted black mesh. The cups also boast a knock-out lattice design with a triangular fringe and a bow adorning the centre gore.

The knickers match the bra beautifully, with an identical diamond design, nude and black mesh overlay and feminine bow motifs. The black dotted mesh on the back of the knickers allows for a cheeky flash of derrière - a look that is saucy yet sophisticated!

The black mesh suspender belt is also a very versatile piece that adds contrast to the lingerie set, whilst nipping you in at the waist. Featuring a minimalist lattice design, thick adjustable suspenders and bows, this garter belt is modern vintage seduction through and through!

Although the bra is not my size, the garter belt and knickers fit beautifully. The stretch-mesh knickers and suspender belt with boning are very comfortable to wear and both contour to your curves without digging in. The nude and black mesh fabric combination is really striking and the attention to detail makes this Chantal Thomass set delightfully luxurious and elegant.

Chantal Thomass lingerie certainly impresses with its timeless, feminine and seductive pieces. Reviewed: Mimi Holliday by Damaris 'Bisou Bisou' non-padded bra for larger cup sizes

Avant-garde lingerie should be full of surprises. It must push design boundaries. Through lingerie a woman shows her true style. It is integral that my designs are luxurious, fun, interesting, intricate and essentially, functional." - Damaris Evans

   If you are in search of luxurious lingerie with high fashion impact, Damaris is certain to have any lingerista weak at the knees! With a background in Fashion Print design and a strong creative flair, Damaris Evans created Damaris lingerie in September 2001 after noticing a gap in the commercial lingerie market for a high end lingerie brand. 

   The Damaris brand was an instant hit and soon Press and celebrity clientele were clammering to snap up the gorgeous designs. Evans went on to win several awards (including the Elle Style Award for 'Young Enterprise of the Year' and the 'Inspire and Mentor' Marie Claire campaign award). Her stunning avant-garde designs continue to be received with great acclaim from both fashion and lingerie fields alike.

   As you can see, the attention to detail, luxury fabrics, high quality finish, swarovski embellishments and edgy designs are quite simply put..stunning! I am particularly enamoured with the Damaris 'Tutti Frutti' 'bum cleavage' knickers (below)..

   Of course, such craftmanship comes at a high price and Damaris lingerie retails at around £100+ for a pair of knickers and lingerie can go up to and exceed £3000 per piece! The good news for couture-lovers is that Damaris' diffusion line, Mimi Holliday (launched in early 2003), offers similar lingerie luxuries, but at more affordable price points! Mimi Holliday knickers come in at around £35-£40 and bras at around £50-£60, meaning that you can pick up some gorgeous luxury pieces for less! 

   Mimi Holliday differentiates itself from mainline, Damaris, in that the lingerie tends to be very playful, colourful and fun, whilst remaining sexy and boudoir in feel. I personally fell in love with Mimi Holliday lingerie due to the unique and edgy designs coupled with the fearless colour/print clashes and zingy colour cocktails of neon yellows and pinks. 

   I also applaud the design variations; customers can choose from padded plunge bras, shoulder bras, balcony bras, unpadded 'comfort' bras and matching coordinates including classic knickers, thongs, hipster briefs, boyshorts and high waisted knickers..plus there are some gorgeous slips, suspender belts, camisoles, bodies and babydolls for those in search of some boudoir sex appeal!

   Better still, Mimi Holliday's sizing range goes from 28-40 AA-GG, meaning that many women can enjoy the beautiful lingerie collections! It is fantastic to see such decadent and good quality lingerie that starts at an often-missed-off 28 back and which goes up to a GG cup! 

   A few months back, I went along to a lingerie sample sale that included Damaris and Mimi Holliday and I was thrilled to come across the Mimi Holliday 'Bisou Bisou' blush non padded bra for larger cup sizes in a 28G (which I snapped up for about £25!).

   I was particularly excited to try a 28G in this bra as I had previously been into Selfridges and had tried on several Mimi Holliday bras in a 30FF, which were all too large in the back for me, whilst correct in cup volume. The 'Bisou Bisou' also boasts other bra style options (including a padded plunge, shoulder bra, triangle bra etc.) but the particular bra that I bought is a non-padded plunge style, which is ideal for women with larger busts who prefer a more natural/unboosted shape...

   The 'Bisou Bisou' bra in blush is nothing short of beautiful and it oozes old Hollywood glamour! Its stunning pearly-champagne silk satin is offset by a glorious black cabaret eyelash lace overlay and the bow adornments and soft satin straps are further testimony to this bra's timeless appeal.

   The 'Bisou Bisou' boasts mesh back wings and two hook and eye fastenings. It also features a three piece cup construction, with a sheer top layer of scalloped eyelash lace over a very thin layer of mesh, allowing a subtle but seductive hint of skin to peek through.

   The 28G 'Bisou Bisou' fits nicely in the band and cup and I would say that if you are between sizes like me (I tend to vary between a 28FF and 28G nowadays), it may be worth sizing up in the cup. The shape that it gives is very natural and possibly a bit minimising. Although I tend to favour slightly padded bras over unpadded, I do appreciate a non padded bra if it is as chic and decadent as this lacey delight!

    The bra feels comfortable against the skin thanks to the soft materials used, which is always a bonus. I am really pleased that the top lace panels on the cups are slightly stretchy due to a thin mesh underlay, which allows for the cups to mould nicely to the breast shape. Similarly, care has been taken to make the top edging on the cups elasticated, which is a great design feature as it is comfortable and less likely to cut into the breast tissue.

(Even the shape of this bra on my mannequin is quite 'natural', following the contours of the 'breasts'!)

   I am a little wary of the straps, however, as although they are soft and satin-y, they are also quite thin. They feel very delicate and less reinforced than the straps on other bras that I own and after a whole day of wearing this bra, they do dig in a bit under the strain of a larger cup size. I also wish that the straps were fully adjustable rather than just partially, as it would give a longer lifespan to the straps as they loosen with wear.

   The 'Bisou Bisou' is such a stunning bra (demure and sexy in equal measure) and it is certainly perfect as a special occasion bra, but I'd hesitate to wear it as an everyday bra as it just feels too delicate - I'd probably worry about bouncing or that I'd snag the ornate eyelash lace on my clothing! 

   I love the attention to detail and the 'hand tailored' quality of Mimi Holliday bras, but I feel that the 'Bisou Bisou' bra could perhaps benefit from a little more reinforcement in its construction as it doesn't give a huge amount of support to a larger bust. That said, Mimi Holliday's decadent lingerie is definitely the sort of underwear that you can just slip on and feel a million dollars in and I'd really love to try more from this brand in future!

   The Autumn/ Winter collection looks set to melt hearts and for those of you that are interested in trying the 'Bisou Bisou', fear not, because it returns for the coming season in delectable 'Brulée' and 'Berry':

Illusion Inking: Tatu Couture

   Over the centuries, tattoos have become an increasingly popular type of body modification. Although the reasons for getting a tattoo range from person to person, tattoos can transform the human body into an artistic canvas - tattoos may symbolise a rite of passage, symbols of identity or just be designed to look aesthetically pleasing!

   I have from time to time considered what it would be like to get a tattoo (something small like a rose, a bird or some written text), but I have never felt quite able to commit to something so permanent! Temporary tattoos are all very well, but wouldn't it be fantastic to have something that won't rub off to leave half of the design on your skin? 

   My prayers were answered when I came across Tatu Couture - a brand that combines tattoos with my first love..lingerie!

   Tatu Couture is a new luxury lingerie brand which made its debut at the Lingerie Collective in 2011. Designed and developed by Luisa Sidoli, Tatu couture merges lingerie with 'trompe l'oeil' tattoo motifs, printed on to mesh panels.

   Luisa is no stranger to the world of lingerie design, possessing 15 years of experience in the lingerie industry after graduating with a first class honours degree in Fashion and Textiles from De Montfort University. In the years following her degree, Luisa designed for a variety of well-known names such as Marks & Spencer, Knickerbox, La Senza, Next, Victoria's Secret and also worked for three and a half years as Senior Designer at Ann Summers. With this impressive resumé, Luisa's strong commercial and creative background led her to create something that she had always dreamed about...her very own lingerie line: Tatu Couture.

   Recently I met up with the lovely Luisa to find out a little more about her exciting new lingerie label. When asked what inspired her, Luisa mentioned Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring 2012 ready-to-wear show, whose models sported tattoo-inspired fashion garments on the runway. Luisa has fused the idea of faux tattoo prints with statement body wear pieces to create an innovative and stand-out new lingerie line.

   In creating Tatu Couture, Luisa has given full reign to her creativity, stating that "Tatu Couture's unique vision is to push the boundaries of design and innovation with its trend setting lingerie and body wear." Whilst developing the range, she also worked alongside professional tattoo artists, which has been key to the authenticity of the tattoo designs used in the finished collection. 

   The collection comprises 8 different lingerie styles; from bodysuits to high waisted knickers, to a basque  and boy shorts. The pieces feature cut-out panels in nude mesh (which come in light and dark tones to suit different complexions). The panels boast printed tattoo motifs with graphic floral designs and elegantly calligraphed inspirational mottos, such as "Give your heart and soul to me and life will always be La Vie en rose" or cheeky slogans such as "Being good isn't always easy."

   Keen to see some of the designs in the flesh, Luisa kindly lent me two of my favourite pieces, which were packaged up in a sleek black box with 'Tatu Couture' emblazoned on the front:

   One of the garments that I chose as a 'stand out' piece from the collection was the 'Grace' high waisted knicker:

   High waisted knickers are a big lingerie trend at the moment, so the 'Grace' knickers are right on point. However, these knickers steer away from convention with provocative sheer mesh panels, which reveal a tantalising hint of skin beneath!

 The 'Grace' knickers also feature a 'suspender belt' style detail at the waist, which adds to their boudoir sex appeal. I loved the tattoo script writing: "We love only what we do not wholly possess" on the lower back mesh panel - an understated tattoo that retains both visual (and philosophical) impact. 

 As you can see from the pictures below, the 'Grace' knickers look even better when worn. The stretchy polyamide and elastane combination with power mesh act as shapewear fabrics. The knickers are smoothing and follow the lines of the body, whilst the 'belt' detail nips you in at the waist to define your curves.

(Although the colour of the mesh panels is slightly darker than my skin tone (which is paler than most), the effect is still very visually arresting.)

This brings me to talk about my absolute favourite piece from the Tatu Couture collection...the 'Talitha' bodysuit:

   The 'Talitha' bodysuit is a stunning black one piece with black mesh on the chest area and contrasting nude mesh cut-outs running from below the bust to the lower stomach and hips. The design of the bodysuit draws emphasis to the waist and hips with 'wrap around' cut out sections. The cuts-outs mimic the illusion of skin, giving a risqué edge to this piece. 

  The 'Talitha' body channels the 'underwear as outerwear' trend, being sexy enough to wear in the bedroom on its own, but working equally well as a fashion piece to be worn on a night out. I would style the 'Talitha' with skinny jeans and a pair of vertiginous heeled shoe boots - the bodysuit would do all the talking (and definitely turn some heads in the process!)

   Unlike many bodysuits that are just slipped on and off like a leotard, Luisa has thought one step ahead by adding popper fastenings at the crotch - a big triumph for design and function! 

   The back of the 'Talitha' is largely made of nude mesh, featuring a stunning dramatic blue and black shaded crysanthemum tattoo print running from shoulder to lower back - a testimony to true tattoo artistry! Although the tattoo print is quite large, the elaborate swirls and artistic shading makes the design very feminine and beautiful. The 'Talitha' is undoubtedly a piece to be worn with confidence - the back mesh panel dips quite low at the back, so be aware that you may flash a little derrière when the body is worn on its own!
